Our Story

From Farm to Table

Here at Alga, we produce fresh Asco and Fucus seaweed products. Guided by a vision to create high quality, healthy, and sustainable food products, we use our experience from the sustainable aquaculture and food industries to provide you with nature's multivitamin: seaweed.

As seaweed grows, it sequesters carbon from the ocean water. Each time we harvest, that carbon is removed from the environment, helping fight both climate change and ocean acidification. Harvesting sustainably gives the seaweed a chance to regrow and therefore does not negatively impact habitats that depend on the seaweed for shelter.

Tollef Olson

Tollef’s lifelong love of healthy food, commercial fishing, and the ocean has brought to life a new coastal cuisine.

Starting Alga, Tollef is using his previous experience in sustainable seaweed farming and nutrition to create a high quality, local, and healthy food product.

Tollef started his journey bringing sustainably raised seafood products from farm to table 26 years ago when he founded Bangs Island Mussel in 1997. He went on to found Ocean Approved in 2005, now DBA Atlantic Seafarms, and installed the first successful commercial seaweed farm for human consumption in the United States in 2010. In 2016, Tollef co-founded Oceans Balance which sold a puree made from Ascophyllum nodosum with great success.

Tollef is a lifelong waterman, surfer, treasure hunter, commercial fisherman, and foodie.
